[CLIP] Voice: Beyoncé  ? You look like Luther Vandross.

[CLIP] Voice: Hoe, but make it fashion.

[CLIP] Voice: But you ain't heard that from me.

[CLIP] Voice: Fierce.

[CLIP] Voice:  [Singing] Call him.'

[CLIP] Voice:  Can't stop.

[CLIP] Voice: [Soft voices rising in background] You see, when you do clownery,

[CLIP] Voice:  'Cause we won't stop.

[CLIP] Voice: --the clown comes back to bite.

[CLIP] Voice: --Can't get no sleep cause ya'll--

[CLIP] Voice:  --It's Britney, bitch.

[CLIP] Voice: Y'all not gonna get no sleep cause of me.

[CLIP] Voice:  [Voices overlapping] We were rooting for you, Tiffany, we were all rooting for you... [Overlapping voices build into crescendo]

[CLIP] Single voice: [Indistinct 00:27] Walls?

[CLIP] Single voice: Who said that?

[0:30]

Josh: Welcome to Back Issue.

Tracy: A weekly podcast that revisits formative moments in pop culture that we still think about.

Josh: Each week, we'll go back into the past and revisit unforgettable moments that we all think we remember and learn what they can teach us about where we are now. This week? Beyoncé  !

Josh & Tracy:  AHHHH!
[CLIP] Beyoncé :  Bass [Music]

[CLIP] Interviewer voice: They said the halftime show was so hot, the power went out.

[CLIP] Beyoncé :   Lord Jesus, it's a fire.

[CLIP] Beyoncé : I look like I can't cook --that's accurate.

[CLIP] Beyoncé : I love whales.

[CLIP] Whoopi Goldberg: [00:00:57] You are Beyoncé  ,

[CLIP] Beyoncé : Thank you.

[CLIP] Beyoncé :  --I am a workaholic and I don't believe in "No."

[CLIP] Beyoncé   (As Deena Jones in Dreamgirls: Come on. Turn the wigs around. It’s sophisticated lookin'! [laughs]C’mon!

[1:08]

Tracy: I’m Tracy Clayton

Josh: And I'm Josh Gwynn.

Tracy: Tee hee hee hee. [Josh laughs.] [Music cuts]
Tracy: It's the celebration of [SInging] Beyoncé  's birthday!
Josh: Ayyyy! [They vocalize]
Tracy: Happy birthday to our queen, your queen, my queen, the queen's queen. Everybody's queen, Beyoncé  . [Josh laughs.] And I know that today is not her like, Capital B birthday. But you know what is every day in the month of September, not Beyoncé  's birthday?

Josh: So like her actual god-given birthday is September 4. But we can extend her birthday an extra three days, Ok?
Tracy: You know what, Can we just take the year and give it to Beyoncé  ? Because we're clearly not doing 2020 the right way.

Josh: We can't have nice things.

Tracy: We don't deserve them. [Laughs] What can we say about Gisele Knowles Carter that has not already been said?

Josh: That her name is Ann Marie LaStrassi. And she's Ariana Grande's big sister. And they were both born in the Illuminati Hospital.

Tracy: Well, there is that. You're right. [They laugh]

Josh: But--I mean, she's queen of the charts, queen of our lives. An icon, a patron saint. [Tracy; Mhm.] I'm really excited that we get to dedicate an entire episode to one of the most formative figures in pop culture, at least in my lifetime.

Tracy: I mean, why you try to say it like it's not in my lifetime too [Indistinct 02:24] not be tryin to uh--

Josh: I mean... [Josh laughs]

Tracy:  SAME. You not the special one here. Beyoncé   is the special one, okay?

Josh: I was just saying in my lifetime, because I know that there's probably a lot of old heads that are like, 'Michael Jackson!' [Tracy laughs] Or like, 'James Brown.' And yes, those are also formative pop stars. [Tracy: Mhm] But Beyoncé  ... MMM.

Tracy: Right. Everyone has their Beyoncé  . [Josh: Yeah.] But Beyoncé  , is the Beyoncé  -est of all the Beyoncs.
Josh: --Of the Beyoncé s. I agree.
Tracy: Period.

Josh: I think we should take a second to break down our top four Beyoncé   moments that come to mind...

Tracy: Mm. Because four is her favorite number.

Josh: Her birthday's on the 4th... Jay's birthday is on the 4th...

Tracy: It's how you spell Blue Ivy's name in Roman numerals, you see... [Squeals]

Josh: Consistent queen. During her documentary "Life Is But a Dream," she talks about how the universe will show you patterns if only you look for them. [Tracy: Mm} And four is one of the patterns that she's picked up on.

Tracy: So if we pattern it that way, she'll find the episode. [Josh: AYY!] 'Cause the universe will reveal it. Ah ha ha!

Josh: Aha! Keep your third eye open! [Tracy laughs.]

Tracy: You stupid.
Josh: You ready?

Tracy: Yes.
Josh: Let's go get 'em.

Tracy: The first thing that pops into my head is Beyoncé  's ponytails. Because I've never in my life seen this woman engage with the ponytail that was not just like, otherworldly. For example, the MET Gala when she was in the all-gold situation with the real super high blonde ponytail. Listen.

Josh: Yessssss. The like, dress that looked like a ice skater gold illusion... It was so goooood!

Tracy: Meets like the 'Coming to  America' dress is the inspiration was [Josh: Yesss!] with the ponytail...?!

Josh: Maybe! It was good though.

Tracy: (Gasps) I love it even more.
Josh: I think you just did something.
Tracy: I think I did too-- Well, I think, Beyoncé   did it first and we just noticed. [Josh laughs] I just caught up. [Laughs]

Josh: Four years later to figure it out.

Tracy: Right. Oh. Also, there was that time when she had the long braided ponytail and she just like spun around--

Josh: The animatronic one?

Tracy: Yes. And like mid-air, the ponytail was just like, 'Where shall I go now, my queen? Please direct me’.

Josh: The ponytail was absolutely 100 percent present for every dress rehearsal. It did not mark any of its choreography. [Mm mm] It was there 100 percent. Everything full out.

Tracy: It's a sentient ponytail, that she had. It was a prehensile ponytail. [Josh: Ok!] Uh. Science words Uh Uh. [Josh laughs] [00:04:44] Give me one of your favorite moments.

Josh: Beycella.
Tracy:Mmm. Formerly known as Coachella? [Laughs] Becella, not "Bay-chella."

Tracy: Oh my gosh.

Josh: That's the quickest way to let me know that you are not my friend. You be telling on yourself. [Snaps]

Tracy: You know what? Let me--where's the collection plate? Because I be sayin' that to people, if they pronounce it "Bay?" They the opps. They the opps. They don’t know...

Josh: [Laughs] They the opps! But the fact that she had the nerve to get up on Coachella's white ass stage [Tracy: Mhm] and curse them the fuck out for her being the first...

Tracy: In the sweetest way.

[CLIP] Beyoncé : Coachella thank you for allowing me to be the first Black woman to headline Coachella. [Audience cheering.] [Epic music] Ain't that 'bout a bitch?

Josh: "Ain't that 'bout a bitch?" Which should also be any of our responses, whenever we see any of these raggedy-ass brands get online and brag about having the first Black anything in the year 2020.

Tracy: And then just like horns, performance, just move on, you know?

Josh: [Josh: Ughhhhh] That Coachella performance, which became "Homecoming," the Netflix documentary concert film, [Tracy: Mhm]  was everything because she shot it between two different weekends, right? [Tracy: Mhm.] And one weekend she's wearing this yellow ]Bal-- Balmain? Balmain.

Tracy: I don't know how to prounounce shit. [Laughs]

Josh: I don't have nice things. This really expensive sweatshirt in yellow and then the next weekend she's wearing it in like a pink color. When I first saw the ad for the Netflix documentary, [Tracy: Mhm] there's this dance breakdown that she does when she's twerkin' on bleachers [Tracy: Mhm] with like a hundred thousand people behind her. And they cut between the two weekends and everyone is in the exact same place?!? [Tracy: Mhm] How did you do this?! Like, Ugh! B-cella gave us the "Gettin to the Money" choreography, [Tracy: Oh my gosh.]  which is like, choreography that is the hazing ritual into the Beehive. [Tracy laughs] Like you have to do it in order to get your card. It gave us a Destiny's Child reunion [Tracy: Mhm mhm] and it gave us the dance partners of the century, Beyoncé  and Solange. When they fell, remember?

Tracy: That was the cutest [Josh: AHH!] most adorable moment. I was just like, 'Oh, they have bad balance, just like us! They're human!'

Josh: It looked like we were watching like a home video, [Tracy squeals] like of them as kids, you know?

Tracy: It was so cute.

Josh: It was just so sweet and so pivotal. And like, now everybody is trying to change when they perform at Coachella, like they're trying to change it to whatever-cella like... [Tracy: Mhm.} But B-cella is where it started and B-cella is where it'll stop.

Tracy: Amen.

Josh: Another one of my favorite Beyoncé  moments--it's all the times that Beyoncé   pretends to be a musical instrument.

Tracy [Laughs] Please give us an example.

Josh: I remember the first time that I heard "I Care" and she pretends to be this guitar during the like transition to the bridge or wherever it is in the song. And then I saw this video online with her and Jay-Z's engineer that they use named D.J. Swivel, and he's giving a live talk on how he approaches their sessions and he strips back all of the music and all of the different layers so that you can just hear Beyoncé  and the guitar. And he's like, this is not a drill.

[CLIP] Beyoncé : [Beyoncé  vocalizing like an electric guitar]

[CLIP] DJ Swivel: Kills it. Yup. [Clapping.]

Josh: It sounds so guttural and visceral and sexual and it's full of longing. [Tracy: Mhm] There's another time that she does this, and it's during the ','Beyoncé   Experience during that era? [Tracy: Uh huh.] She's on tour and she performs a live version of "Naughty Girl." She pretends to be the entire horn section during this breakdown where she's just like, [Imitating powerful horn] 'Bo bo buh buh buh buh waaaooow....'

Tracy: Ohhh right and then the horn is like, [imitating higher pitch horn] "Bo bo bo bo buh waaooowww.'
[CLIP] Beyoncé :  [Imitating horn with band in background]

Josh: And then she's like, [Beyoncé  's horn imitation softly underneath] "Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba, body curve! [Tracy laughs] It's SO GOOD!
Tracy: That is a very impressive rendition, I have to say. [Crosstalk] I'm impressed.
Josh: You know... I I I I I try. [Tracy laughs] But the fact that she can make her voice sound like pretty much whatever she wants it to sound like, [Tracy: Mhm] is just like a testament to the amount of hard work that she's put in...

Tracy: Yeah.
Josh: --In terms of her craft, you know?
Tracy: Yeah, man. It's also like such a Blues-y thing to do, like in the tradition of Blues. And jazz. [Josh: Mmm]. So she's just like, "You know what, I know who I am and where I come from." [Josh laughs]

Josh: What's another one of your favorite Beyoncé   moments?

Tracy: A very, very, very, very important, informative Beyoncé   moment for me--like, I would be a different person in some ways if she had not given me permission to be angry the way that she does on "Lemonade?" Because listen. OK. All right. I know. I know. It's a short show. We don't  have a whole lot a time for my true life confessions. But-- [Josh laughs] As a Black woman, me, myself, personally, like Black women, have always tried to be separated from their anger. [Josh: Mhm] 'You don't want to be the angry Black woman' is what Black people say. [Josh:Mm]  And then what white people say when you are just like, not even angry, when you're just like the slightest bit displeased.

Josh: When you're right. When you're--You know what? That's-- [Josh laughs]

Josh & Tracy: [Overlapping] When you're right.

Tracy: And then it's like, 'Oh, here comes the angry Black woman.' Ya'll this president is doing it as we speak. We don't have to put this part in her, but it's true. And so one of those forms of criticism will get you. You know what I mean? Like, when you're in the workplace tryin' to figure out, 'OK, this thing is wrong. I am right. Do I speak up? And if so, how do I do it to circumnavigate this whole narrative of me bein' angry so that people will listen to me [Josh: Mhm.] and not write me off because of my anger, whether or not it's justified...' you know? [Josh: Mhm] And when this song found me, when, "Lemonade" happened and I got to "Don't Hurt Yourself" [Josh: Ohh!] I don't think I cried with my face, but I definitely did with, like, my soul. [Laughs]

Josh: Yeah.

Tracy: Because she's so fucking mad. She's so mad. She's-- [Singing] "Who the fuck-- ["Don't Hurt Yourself" clip rising as they finish the line.]

Josh & Tracy: --do you think I is?".

[CLIP] "Don't Hurt Yourself" by Beyoncé :  Who the fuck do you think I is/ You ain't married to no average bitch, boy/ You can watch my fat ass twist, boy

Tracy: I'm just like, OK, first of all, I knew that she cussed... And like, on the self-titled album, she was like, I'm coming out of my shell. "Partition. I have sex on my gosh.' And this time she's like, I'm mad. I'm angry, I'm pissed, and everybody is going to motherfucking know it.' [Josh: Mm] I made the connection between, like, the power of an angry Black woman. [Josh: Mm.] And then I was like, that's why nobody wants us to connect with that anger, because angry Black women will get shit the fuck done. [Josh: Right.] She said, 'Go 'head, cheat on me. But guess what's gonna happened to you. We're going to tour the entire world. I'm going to cuss you out at least once per show-- [Josh: Ughh] loudly.''

Josh: Not only me--all of the audience, [Crosstalk] is going to, as well.

Tracy: --They're gonna sing with me. OK? [Josh laughs] They're going to cuss you out with me on my behalf.'

Josh: 'I hope you're OK with that.'

Tracy: 'Cause you have to be, you know, like, that's it. That's life.' And I'm just like, how healing must that have been for her [Josh: Mm] to be able to do that? You know what I mean? And like in doing that is healing for people like me because I was mad as shit at the moment. The "Lemonade" album, of course, is about the what is--seven, eight, nine steps grief? I don't know. I only concern myself like up to anger, honestly, so I don't know.

Josh: I mean that's where I get stuck that I c-- I count to like three or four, wherever that one stops.

Tracy: You know what? I hit, "Don't Hurt Yourself..."

Josh: And then I skip to "All Night." I stay there for about [Tracy: Mm] the length of the song, [Tracy: Uh huh.] and then I go back.

Tracy: See? So, I only-- For the longest time, I had only heard "Sandcastles" once. [Josh laughs] I had only heard "All Night" once because I'm like, these are great songs, but you know what? I'm not there yet. [Josh: Mhm]. And I don't--I don't feel it. But then let me tell you what happened. When I realized that I couldn't connect with the forgiveness part [Josh: Mhm] was because I did not forgive the people that fucked me over? [Josh: Mm] And when I realized that forgiving yourself is as imporant? [Josh: Whew!]  That's when I could listen to "Sandcastles."

Tracy: Okay!

Tracy: That's when I could listen to "All Night." That being said, the one that gets the most played, to this day. Having forgiven myself, or worked on it at all, Still "Don't Hurt Yourself." [Josh: Mm.] STILL. UGH. [Claps] Bless Beyoncé  , my therapist.  Bless her. [Josh laughs] Bless her!

Josh: I was ‘bout to say, are you gon’ invoice her?!

Tracy: Well, you know, Invoice her with my love. [Laughs]

[13:04]

Josh: We could talk about our favorite Beyoncé   moments all day. [Tracy: Mhm] And I think that it's kind of like a false exercise, like we're never going to be able to come up with a full list. So we should come up with a list of honorable mentions.
Tracy: I think is only fair and is probably legally a good idea so that the Beehive does not come for us. [Josh laughs.]

Josh: OK. Ready?

Tracy: Yes. [Music]

Josh: The time that she said that she was gonna fire somebody from stage and she was like 'Somebody's getting fired, hey, hey.'

Tracy :That time she did the National Anthem at the Super Bowl and people thought she was lip singin'. And then she came out and she did it again, and she was like, "Any questions?"

Josh: Blue Ivy's existence.

Tracy: "Carmen: A Hip-Hopera.”

Josh: The Billboard 2011 performance where she gave you the Powerpoint of your life.

Tracy: The time she was like, "I mean, somebody can send you your luggage." [Josh Laughs]

Josh: That time she was on "The Tyra Show" and she gave the best Aaron Neville impression of all that time.

Tracy: That she did that Pepsi commercial with all the other versions of herself. And then that other Pepsi commercial where she dressed like a gladiator with Pink and Britney Spears.

Josh: That time she almost did a music video with Alicia Keys called "Put It in a Love Song" where they were supposed to be in Brazil during Carnival. But we never got to see it. But I trust your vision. [Tracy laughs.] The time that she was a guest on "The View" and Whoopie said. "But you're Beyoncé  ." And she said "Thank you."
Tracy: [Laughs] So good. That time that she put Tracy the Clayton on a website for Black History Month.

Josh: AYYYY!

Tracy: AYYYY! [Josh laughs.]
Tracy: Flex flex flex flex flex.

Josh: Do you think we missed any?

Tracy: Absolutely! [Josh laughs]  There's no--there's [Josh: Absolutely] no possible way that we did not miss somebody's favorite and greatest moment. So please Tweet me @brokeymcpoverty or Tweet Josh @regardingjosh with your moments. But don't get with us be like, 'Oh, you forgot this one.' We know... It's not a 74-year show, OK?

Josh:There's only so much bandwidth on this Internet.

Tracy: Exactly. [Laughs]

[14:46]

Josh: So me and Tracy obviously have a bunch of feelings about Beyoncé  , and we know that you have a bunch of feelings about Beyoncé  . So we asked ya'll to call the Back Issue hotline at 678-74-ISSUE, and answer the following question: If you could speak directly to Beyoncé  , what would you say? We put together some of your responses. Take a listen. [Sound of phone dialing. Ringing.]

[CLIP] Voice 1: Girl. Madam. Ma'am. Ms. King, Beyoncé  . I just have one question. And that's, what did my edges ever do to you? [Music]

[CLIP] Voice 2: Um If I could leave a message Beyoncé  , it would be a 'Thank you,' obviously. Um, but a thank-you for her work ethic and her constantly showing us that you can continue to raise the bar.
[CLIP] Voice 3: There's never going to be another artist in my lifetime that has done what she's done. Someone that inspires me to be better and to do better every single day of my life for what's been like 20 years now. I'm just so thankful for her existence.

[CLIP] Voice 4:  Beyoncé  , thank you for "Black Is King." Your visual album left me mesmerized. The fashion, the makeup, the locale -- Everything was a feast for the eyes. You inspired me and my work. I am a poet and I'm going to be using a lot of the lyrics and images in "Black Is King" to inspire my poetry and write some poems.

[CLIP] Voice 5: Thank you for allowing me not to be scared of my creativity, to not be afraid of it. To take power in it. Because you showing me that art can not only just be beautiful, but can have a message and nuance and hold power beyond just yourself, but it goes and spreads throughout a community.
[CLIP] Voice 1: You seem intent on, every few months, just [Indistinct 17:00-01] snatching me bald. And, while I willingly sign up every time, and I appreciate it every time you do it, I just wonder 'Why my edges?'

[CLIP] Voice 6: I'm personally so grateful to watch her...I was going to be in her prime, but I feel like, her prime is just un-ending. Um, but...Watching her perform just makes me feel like whatever the thing is that I have been worried about doing or putting off doing, or worry that other people do better than me it? It inspires me to make that extra effort to try to be the best at it. So. I would like to thank Beyoncé  for that.
[CLIP] Voice 3: Thank you. Thank you for being the best and for inspiring me everyday to be better.
[CLIP] Voice 1: Thank you. And please tell Blue to have mercy on us.

[CLIP] Voice 4: So thank you again. Beyoncé   for your work. Keep it going, girl. 'Cause it is needed in our culture. [Music cuts]

Tracy: It is beautiful and really refreshing, especially in this day and age, to be able to come together, even if it's via audio, and share how much Beyoncé   means to us. Because the people need a hero. And Beyoncé   day is always a hero.

[18:01]

Tracy: We all know however, that the epicenter of Beyoncé   stardom is the podcast, "The Read." So we wanted to pay homage to them. Shout out to "The Read." And we also want to share host, Crissle West's story of the way that Beyoncé   can just come into your life and fill you up and shake some shit up. And move some shit around to get you to the best of your very very best self. [Music]

[CLIP] Crissle: I had been living in Oklahoma City for a while, probably close to 10 years, and I was just like overworked and constantly stressed out about my health and just, you know, going to church every Sunday, like praying like, 'God, please deliver me from this insane situation that I'm in.' I was basically living off of cigarettes and Cheez-its and uh, very cheap vodka and getting like no sleep. Towards the end of my time in that job, I was so stressed that my eyelids just started twitching out of nowhere and it kept going for like an entire day. I was like, this can't be good. So I go to the doctor, and the doctor takes my blood pressure and then he frowns and takes it again. And I'm like, that can't be good. And this man is like, 'You need to go straight to the E.R. because your blood pressure is like 220 over 160.' It was something insane where I was like, I'm sorry, I didn't know a blood pressure could be that? Like, bitch, what? And that's when I was like, OK, something has to change because this job is actually affecting my real health now.

[Music Fades Up, Down]

[CLIP] Crissle: So when my friends were like, you know, let's go Beyoncé   at Revel, you know, right after she had Blue Ivy, I was like, bad. Let's go, you know? When I landed in New York City, I just immediately felt like this pull to come to the city instead of Atlanta. 'Cause I had been planning on moving to Atlanta because that felt like something that was pretty manageable for me as somebody who grew up in Oklahoma. It was like Atlanta is, you know, still the South. And a lot of the same cultural traditions and things like that. But I just felt this, immediately, this pull to come to New York City instead. And then when we actually drove to Atlantic City and saw Beyoncé  , it felt like Beyoncé   was telling me with them colored light boxes she had on stage, that I needed [Chuckles] to move to New York. I know you got stuff set up in Atlanta. You got a job lined up and an apartment. But you need to cancel all that shit. Go home, pack your bags and move to New York instead. [Music building.] And so, that is what I did.

[CLIP] Beyoncé  at Revel: [Singing “End of Time”] Say you’ll never let me go/ Say Say you’ll never let me go! Atlantic city, I love y’all.

Josh: Will you look at Beyoncé  's impact! If she hadn't inspired/hypnotized Crissle to move to New York, the podcast The Read podcast might not even have happened.

And just think of all the subtle ways she's probably changed your life too. Maybe she inspired you to leave a note in the hallway... or become a marine biologist because you, also - as well - love whales. Whatever it is, Beyoncé   is an inspiration to us all and I don't know what we would do without her.

After the break, we chat with Matt Bellassai about the OTR II tour, his favorite  Beyoncé   songs, and we play a ruthless game that separates the true Hive from the casuals."

 [Music fades]

[MIDROLL]

[21:14]

[Music]

Josh: We talked about our favorite Beyoncé   moments earlier, but one of my favorite personal Beyoncé   moments of all time of my entire life is when I got to go to the On the Run 2 tour with my friend Matt Bellassai. [Tracy: Aw!] So I thought we would bring him on to talk about that night and more.

Josh: Welcome Matt.
Matt Bellassai: Hi.

Tracy:Hey Matt!

Matt: One of my fave memories too--Any memory that includes Beyoncé  , is life changing.

Tracy: [Overlapping] ...is your favorite?
Josh: But it was a very special night, right, because we all went to Jersey to go see her. [Matt: Mhm.] And then they had this huge storm. And like, the New Jersey Safety Commission--I don't know who he was, but like some important looking white man came out onto the stage [They laugh] and was like, "Y'all all have to vacate the premises. You have to get out of where you're sitting. And we all had to go under the awnings where all the concession stands were. [Tracy: Mhm]

Matt: Right. I just love that it was like, literally 50,000 people being like, 'We will literally die for Beyoncé  . [Josh laughs]

Tracy: That sounds terrifying.

Matt: [Laughs] because it's New York, we were sheltered at... with like Lin Manuel Miranda and--

Josh: Chloe and Hallie--

Matt: --and like all of these other...It's like, 'Oh.' Everybody-- [Josh laughs]

Tracy: Were ya'll in like--

Matt: were all out.

Tracy: --the VIP section?

Josh: No, it was the great equalizer because literally there was no organization to where people were going when they were like seeking shelter. [Tracy: Uh huh.] And so all the people that were in the VIP section, all the people that were in the section next to VIP and like [Matt gasps] everywhere else, were all huddled in one area.

Matt: But also like, it doesn't matter who you are, like you are there and you are beneath Beyoncé  . [Josh: Exactly] There is like a God-tier, and then there is everybody else.

Tracy: A society in which everyone is truly equal. Look at what Beyoncé   did. [They laugh]
Josh: You know? [Matt laughs] And then I don't know if it was like part of her plan, or what was going on, but the storm cleared and we go back to our seats and they're performing, Beyoncé   and Jay-Z. And they have those huge screens with the prerecorded video things that they do as like interstitials between the music and stuff. [Tracy: Mhm] And the lightning would strike like right at the right moment. [Matt & Josh laugh] And it was just like extra dramatic. It was so much fun. Ugh.

Tracy: Beyoncé  did that. [Matt: Yeah.] You know, the lightning strikes, she's like, 'Here you go--Bam.' [Matt laughs]
Matt: I've seen her a-a-a few times not to brag... [Tracy laughs] Um, but that was the first, like, stadium tour I saw [Josh sighs] where it's like 50,000 people are in the crowd. She performs for everybody. Like, everything was just so...The outfits, the like dance--

Josh: the choreography--

Matt: --the stage [Josh: Mm.] Everything.

Josh: Yeah. You just felt her energy throughout that place radiating [Tracy: Aw!] and like everyone is there to see the show. And it's just the funnest this time until it's time to leave. And you have to wait in line for like three hours [Tracy: Mmm] [Matt laughs] and to get on the train. But I'd do it all over again. I would do it all over again.

Tracy: Aw, that is so beautiful!

Josh: So, Matt, I wanted to ask you a question.

Matt: OK.

Josh: You are put on a desert island, right?

Matt: Mhm.
Josh: You can only take three Beyoncé  songs with you.
Matt: [Sighs] OK.
Josh: You have like an old iPod, and it like only can fit three songs. [Matt laughs] Which ones are you putting on there?
Matt: That...that is an intense question. 'Cause that's also like... Obviously I have my list of top Beyoncé   songs. But I don't know if I'm prepared to never listen to the rest of them ever again.

Tracy: Good point, good point.

Matt: Which is basically what you're a-- It's not just my three faves. It's like these are the three that I'm stuck with.

Tracy: It's kind of a rude question when you think of it that way. [They laugh]
Matt:  I mean, I-I could genuinely listen to any Beyoncé   song like on repeat. So, you know, I-I can imagine only having three of them and doing that forever. Um, I would say my three-- "Why Don't You Love Me."

Josh:  I love that song.
Matt: A classic also video--
Josh: [Overlapping] and that video.
Matt: Yeah.

Josh:Yeah.

Tracy: That video was everything.

Matt: The other one that I--this is--don't judge me too much. But it is genuinely a good Beyoncé  song is, "Work it out" from the Austin Powers soundtrack.
Josh:  Her first solo track.
Matt: Yeah.
Josh: Yeah.

Tracy: Is It?

Josh: It's her first solo track. [Matt laughs]

Tracy: Aww. That's a good song, though.
Josh: It’s a great song.

Tracy:There's no judgement to be had here. Yes.
Matt: To me that is always like if I'm in a bad mood, that will put me in a good mood.

Josh: Yeah.

Tracy: Mmm.
Matt: It just reminds me of that movie, which was, a classic...

Josh: 'A whole lotta woman!' [Tracy laughs]
Matt: And then I feel like the Flawless remix featuring Nicki Minaj is up there for me.
Josh: I love that one, too.
Matt: Also, it came out on my birthday, so I feel like it was [Josh: Uhhh] for me...

Josh: Birthday present. [Tracy laughs]

Matt:So. Yeah. "Flawless," "Why Don't You Love Me" and then "Work It Out," are my three desert island Beyoncé   songs.
Josh: I think that's a really good list.

Matt: But it is a rude question. [They laugh] It is mean of you to make me pick only three, because I'm cutting out a lot. A lot of great Beyoncé   songs.

Josh: Fair. Fair.

Matt: And I feel like this is my retribution will be forcing you to play a very cruel game.

Josh: OK.
Tracy: Uh oh.

Matt: I'm going to turn the tables on-on both of you now.
Tracy: I didn't even do nothing. This was Josh's question! [Matt and Josh laugh]

Matt: You are complicit!
Josh: [Crosstalk] 'See, how I get broughted into it' like, I'm just thinkin of that NeNe gif...

Tracy: Ohhhh man [Laughing] Right...

Matt: You asked me to come on your show [Tracy: Dammit] and then you debase [Josh laughs] me by asking me to pick only three Beyoncé   songs. [Tracy: Ugghhh] You're gonna get a tough-ass game. So this is uh word association where I will give you one word and you have to identify the lyric or the song that this word comes from. And I have to say [Tracy: Whaaa?!] This list is pretty tough.

Josh: OK.

Matt: [Laughs] Even as Beyoncé  stan myself, it's-it's not  [Laughs] --Good luck! [Josh laughs]

Josh: I'm terrified.
Tracy: Noooo!

Josh: You're going to pick a word and we're gonna pick a song that has that word in it.

Mat: Yes.

Josh: OK.

Matt: Yes.

Tracy: Uggh I just forgot every Beyoncé   song I've ever known. That's why I'm not good at the this version of these games. You know what? Let's just. I'm ready. This is your fault, Josh. How dare you. [Josh Laughs] Okay. I'm ready. I ain't scared. Let's go.

Matt:  Your first word: bamboos.
Tracy: What?! "Bamboos," plural?
Matt: Yeah.
Josh: Bamboos....

Matt: Mm hmm. Mm hmm.
Josh: Bamboos?

Tracy:  Ah, [Singing] see me up in the club with 50 bamboos..
Matt: OK. Uh... There was an attempt at a song. [Tracy laughs]
Tracy: Do I get like a half a point for creativity anywhere? Is that a thing, is that an option?

Matt: How about I give you, for this one at least, um, the full line from this particular song.

Josh: OK.
Tracy: OK.

Matt: "Bamboos on, pants down low, I'm a rock star."  It's also I'm delivering it like I'm reading Shakespeare. [They laugh]

Josh: [Singing] Bamboos on...

Tracy: So bamboos are shoes...I'm guessing?

Josh: I'm guessing she's talking about earrings.

Matt: Yeah.
Tracy: [Gasps] I lose this game, so much.
Josh:[Singing softly] Bamboos on, on. Pants down low... Is it "Hip Hop Star?"

Matt: Yes! [Bell Dings, with “Okay” from Savage (remix) with Meg thee Stallion and Beyoncé ]
Josh: Oh my God, Ayyyy! [Tracy: Ahhhh]

[CLIP] Hip Hop Star by Beyoncé : Hip Hop Star/Bamboos on Pants down low I’m a Rockstar

Tracy: Wowww okay. But do you get the point because you had to be read the full line in the lyric. I'm just saying I though that the...
Josh: You still didn't get it!

Tracy: Ok It's not about me though, it's not about me...I bowed out minutes ago. [laughs] I'm just trying to make sure.

Josh: Maybe that's a practice round. Let's keep going.
Matt: Yeah--
Tracy: Mmkay. Alright, alright.
Matt: --that was a--that was a hard one. Um--
Tracy: That was mean. And I didn't even do nothin'. I just want to keep reminding people that this is happening to me for no reason. [They laugh] All I did was come to work today, and look.

Matt: To be fair, this really should have no standing on whether or not you are a true Beyoncé , a fan. Because [Tracy: Mhm] the difficulty is high.

Josh: It's like the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle of Beyoncé   fandom.

Matt: Yes. Yes.

Tracy:That's too much. And it's like, it's like having too many choices at a restaurant. And like, my brain just like empties. And I'm just like, 'When everything is an option, what is the answer?' I don't know...

Matt: That is the problem [Tracy laughs] with having a fave with a discography that is [Tracy laughs]

Tracy: You right.

Matt: --Cheesecake-Factory-menu long. [Josh laughs]

Tracy: You are right, you are right.

Josh: This was so hard.

Tracy: Who's idea was this? [They laugh] I'm ready--look, I got the next one. I'm ready--
Josh: OK.
Tracy: Let's go.

Matt: Trill.

Josh: Texas trill, Bow Down.

Matt: Mm hm Mm hm... [Bell Dings, with “Okay” from Savage (remix) with Meg thee Stallion and Beyoncé .
Tracy: Y-you didn't even give me--ok. [Josh laughs] I knew it too!

Matt: Josh just had that, he felt it in his heart.

Josh: Ohhh....

Tracy: I wish ya'll could have seen like the face and just like the motions with which Josh just embodied the spirit of Texas Trill.
Josh: You gotta say it cause she- that's the one where she has like the vocoder or whatever [tracy: Mhm] on her voice or she sounds like chopped and screwed and HTown.

Tracy: [Overlapping] Texas trill.l

Josh: - Texas Trill.

Matt: Right. Right.
[CLIP] "I Been On" by Beyoncé : Texas Trill. H-Town, Going down. Man.
Tracy: OK. OK. All right.

Matt: Let's see.

Tracy: I got it. I'm ready. Whatever it is, I got it.

Matt: Uh. Chinchilla.

Tracy [00:31:00] This was the one you--that  you said was supposed to be easier?

Matt: No. That was the last one. [Josh laughs]

Tracy: Oh, okay. All right. [Tracy laughs] Oh, oh, oh, oh. I know this one. I know. I know--

Josh: I got it. Jay-Z goes--
Tracy: Wait. Don't say it yet.  Uhhhh I know it I just don't know it. [Josh laughs] My brain is like, you know that one, that one, That one. OK. You gonna say it, I'm gonna be don't be mad, be like, 'I knew it.' Ugh but go ahead.
Josh: "Crazy in Love."
Tracy: What's the...What's the whatchamacallit...

Josh: Jay-Z goes, "Best thing the chinchilla." Isn't that "Crazy in Love?"

Matt: That is true. Yeah.

[Bell Dings, with “Okay” from Savage (remix) with Meg thee Stallion and Beyoncé ]

Josh: Ahhhh!

Matt: That is. That is one of them.

Tracy: What?!

Matt: There is another one.
Josh: I'm j--I'm gonna guess just like this is the SAT's and I'm working backwards. At the end of "Upgrade You," she lists a bunch of stuff that I don't know because I'm--I have no money. [Laughs] I'm pretty sure chinchilla is on there...

Tracy: [Overlapping] Purple Haze, somethin. [Matt laughs] Somethin' chinchilla. Yeah, I think you right. I don't know.

Matt: That sounds right. It's not. [Buzzer] But it sounds right. Ah...
Tracy: There's a-thre's another one?

Matt: Yeah. It's in a song where she repeats the words, "If I let you go."

[Siren Sounds]
Tracy: Oh!

Josh: Oh!

Tracy: [Singing] And neh neh neh Oh! if I let it go. Somethin somethin somethin-- "Ring the Alarm," that one?

Matt: Yeah. [CLIP "Ring the Alarm" by Beyoncé ]

Josh: Yeah.
Josh: Yeah. You can’t put blue light on Black girls?

Tracy: Do I--Do I get half point? [Matt & Tracy laugh]

Josh: Yes. You get half a point.
Tracy: Yayyy!!! [Clapping] [Sing-song] Pity points still count in my world.
Matt: Okay, fine, fine. "Booty"

Tracy: Licious. [Bell Dings]

Josh: Yeah!
Tracy: Heh! How dare you sound surprised.

Josh: I wasn’t surprised! [Tracy overlapping/indistinct 32:42-43] I just love the fact that you, you know, split the word. That's smart--

Tracy: Oh yeah, you know--

Josh: --and creative.

Tracy:"...because my body too bootylicious for you..." Yayyyy! Two and a half points. Three points. [Josh Laughs]

Matt: That was a give me.  [Laughs] That was a give me for Tracy.
Tracy: And you know what? I took it...I would like to thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Got some points on the board.

Josh: AYYY.

Tracy: Yes.
Matt: Let's see. Ah-- short set.

Tracy: Oh it was hot--
Josh: [Overlapping] Oh, it was so hot I'm gonna buy him a short set... Sugar mama.

Tracy: --He looks so good, I wanna buy him a short set.

[Bell Dings, with “Okay” from Savage (remix) with Meg thee Stallion and Beyoncé ]

Josh: I think it's a tie.

Tracy: Umm, Judges? Um actually, I'm the one that got the lyrics right...

Josh: OH!

Tracy: Um, I'm just saying, the words are--

Josh: Oh oh wow! Ok. it's on. It's on.

Tracy: --Damn. That was so good. I want to buy him a Short Set.

Josh: --buy him a short set.
Tracy: And you said, there was a word that was off. So I'm just saying, we can still split [Josh laughs] the point if you want to. But I mean, technically, all the point is mine, but, you know. It just hate losing!

Josh: I can tell. [Tracy laughs]

Matt: Algebra.
Josh & Tracy: [Singing together] "I don't know much about alge-ba...." [Josh laughs] [Bell Dings, with “Okay” from Savage (remix) with Meg thee Stallion and Beyoncé ]

Matt: Right. I actually pronounced it as it is spelled. [Josh laughs] Um, so that's point for nobody because she doesn't actually say algebra. She says something-- she says her own science.

Josh: I--

Tracy: Um, to-be judges, once again, I did say alge-BA--

Josh: So did I!

Tracy: --which is what that she says…

[CLIP] 1+1 by Beyoncé  "I don't know much about alge-ba, but I know one...']

Tracy: [Josh laughs] Ok, I mean I just Ok, I just--just want to make sure the judges is listening.

Josh: OK.
Matt: Ah, cheek.

Tracy: Uh. Cheek. Something 'bout a booty. [Sing-song] "Left cheek, right cheek drop it like--
Josh & Tracy: --it always fine.
Josh: AYYY! Go 'head, Tracy. Alright--that was a good one. [Tracy squeals] Tracy the Clayton.

Tracy: Hehe!

Matt: Yeah.

Tracy: Am I winning yet?

Matt: I don't know. Has anybody been keeping track of points?

Tracy: YES!
Matt: 'Cause I certainly haven't. [Laughs]

Josh: No.

Tracy: No, I haven't either.

Josh: Me either. You want to do, like, Love and Basketball, double or nothing for the last one?

Tracy: [Sighs] You know, I'm playin' from my heart, always...OK. Let's do it. [Josh laughs] [Sighs] OK. All right. OK. All right. OK

Matt: OK

Tracy: --let me just say, that if I lose, it's OK 'cause all in good fun and I'm not going to be sitting on my couch thinking about it for the rest of the day. [Josh laughs] 'Cause that's not who I am anymore. Been working on myself... OK.
Matt: OK. Ready?

Tracy: Yes.
Josh: Mhm.
Matt: Vogue.

 [Tracy exhales]

Matt: The suspense. [Tracy laughs]

Josh: Vogue.

Tracy: Okay, so, okay.

Matt: Should I--or should I sing it in-in key? Or it won't be in key. [They laugh] [Singing] Vogue. [Laughs] Vogue. [Josh and Tracy laugh]

Tracy: Wait can you--once-- once more]

Matt: Vogue.

Tracy: And it was not in key, you said.

Matt: Probably not.
Tracy: OK. Ok.

Matt: Unless I accidentally got it right.
Tracy: Hmm.

Josh: What era is it from?

Matt: Ah, ok.

Josh: I feel like I'm in a spelling bee. Can I get the origin?

Tracy: [In a kid voice] Can you use it in a sentence.

Matt: I'll give you two words: "Vogue says."

Josh: Oh. "Pretty Hurts."
Matt: Mm hmm.

[Bell Dings, with “Okay” from Savage (remix) with Meg thee Stallion and Beyoncé ]

Josh: Oh.

Matt: [Singing] Vogue says thinner is better.

Tracy: Mmmmm!

Josh: Yeah, that's it! [Laughs]

Matt: I--yeah, I. Yeah, that was aboslutely was was not in key [They laugh]. I think I made it harder by trying to uh... [Laughter]

Josh: This was is a hard game.

Tracy: This was hard... Okay, postgame interview,  [Cameras clicking & postgame interview sounds] you know what I'm sayin'. I'm came out here with my team thinking it was gonna be like a normal and fair game, you know? So that's what I was expecting but I did not quite find that situation when I got to the court and um you what I'm sayin'... And I just try to you know, they they had til the halftime, I’m not gon’ lie, not gon’ lie. Uh, and you know, I lost so I gotta go to the locker room. That's fine. [Laughs]
Matt: I think it's a fair reminder that none of us are w-worthy in Beyoncé  's eyes. We're all sinners. [Josh laughs]

Tracy: Seriously...Mmmm....Mhm
Matt: --We're all flawed. And, and that's that's alright.

Tracy: Yeah.

Josh: That was fun but It was hard. I'm not gonna lie.

Tracy: It was. It was even in the event that we never played this game again, I'm gonna study so that next time, [Matt chuckles]  just in case, some Beyoncé   word association pops up in the middle of my day, I'm ready. I'm ready--

Matt: Yeah. You should just always be prepared.

Tracy: --This has made me a better person. Always!

Josh: But Matt, where can people find you, and tell us what's happening on Unhappy Hour.

[Music Rises]

Tracy: Ooo!

Matt: Ya. Well I am all over the internet @MattBellassai. And then you can hear me on my podcast Unhappy Hour, uh every week, we're complainin' and bitchin' about some new and different stuff [Tracy chuckles] when there's a lot happening in the world to bitch about. So...

Josh: Like, there's no shortage of things.

Matt: No...
Josh: That you can talk about --

Matt: --There's always room to complain. Always.

Josh: Thank you, Matt. Thank you so much for coming on--

Tracy: --This was fun.

Josh: --It was such a joy.

Matt :Yeah, thank you, guys.

[Music ends]

[36:55]

[Music: Learn something from this Bounce Remix]

Josh: [Beyoncé  voice]  Okay. So this is the part of the episode where we talk about what we learn today, we take a moment to channel the spirit of Tyra Banks and take her advice. So Tracy,
Tracy: So Joshua Marie. You gon' have people out here really calling me these names, Tracy.

Tracy: Oh, they will. [Laughs]
Josh: I just want to say that you are the only one [Tracy laughs] that is allowed to do this.

Tracy: Ya'll heard the boundaries, it's your responsibility to heed them. That being said... So, ah, Joshua Richard. [Josh laughs] Did we...

[CLIP] Tyra Banks: "LEARN FROM THIS?!"

Josh: I mean, we learned that Beyoncé   is still it.

Tracy: Always and forever.

Josh: She's still that girl.

Tracy: Yep.

Josh: She's still an icon, and she is the moment.

Tracy: We also learned that if the world sucks this much with her in it, imagine life without.
Josh: Oh, God.

Tracy: Ok, tt's OK. We don't think about it too long [Josh laughs] because it's a very panic-inducing situation.

Josh: Right.

Tracy: But she really does just makes shit better, in so many different ways.

Josh: There's so many times where, like, you look at the news.

Tracy: Yeah...

Josh: And then you go to bed and then you wake up and there's a new Beyoncé   song.

Tracy: Wooo!
Josh: And she dropped it at midnight cause she don't care about your job. [Tracy laughs]  And she just knew, 'You know,I have this archive of music. [Tracy: Mhm] Let me just feed the kids a little bit.

Tracy: Let me help out.
Josh: Let me get them through the week.
Tracy: Let me sprinkle a blessing.

Josh: --You know?

Tracy: Do we deserve...? Probably not.

Josh: I don't think so. [Laughs]

Tracy: Are we grateful? Absolutely. I have also learned that no matter who you are, no matter where you are, no matter your opinion on Beyoncé  , whether it's correct or wrong--there is a wrong opinion, I just want you to know. One thing that you cannot dispute is that that woman works harder than anybody I've ever met slash not met in my life. Like she grinds....

Josh: Our producer, Emmanuel, is...a witch. And he [They laugh] and when I told him that one of the things that I love about Beyoncé is the amount of hard work that she puts in, he says that that's because I'm an earth sign.
Tracy: I am also an earth sign.

Josh: It's meant to be.

Tracy: The thing is, I don't have the greatest work ethic. So... [Josh laughs] I feel like I'm not saying Emmanuel's wrong, because Emmanuel's the witch, not me. I'm just saying, like, I just appreciate ya'll. That's that's all. [They laugh]

Josh: I'm just saying that Beyoncé   is the carrot that we put in front of ourselves in order to become our best selves, right? Like, there's a reason that, like on all of these water bottles, there's like sayings like you have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyoncé   [Tracy: Uh huh] because everyone can recognize the fact that she has worked so hard. [Tracy: Mhm.] Her hard work lets me believe, if only for a second, that the world is merit based..
Tracy: Mmmm. Like there's a world in which if you do the work, then regardless, you will get the spoils.

Josh: Exactly.

Tracy: What a concept.
Josh: And I can look at her career and look at her and feel that way for only, you know, 30 seconds.

Tracy: Okay. Okay. I get that.

Josh: But those 30 seconds? Priceless. [Tracy laughs]

Tracy: Second 31: AHHHHHHH [They laugh] What else have we learned today? I have learned that we still have access to joy.

Josh: Yeah.

Tracy: Forever, because Beyoncé  's music, her work is always going to be here no matter what else happens out there. If you can't find anything else to pick you up and make you feel good or just like help you to scream and cuss out your bosses, because a what they did to you...

Josh: OK.

Tracy: There's Beyoncé  .

Josh: Yeah. And I feel like in this time, you know, where we're all like separated and divided. It feels good that there's at least one thing we can agree on.

Tracy: The great unifier.

Josh: She's able to give us like this sense of like coming together and like the idea of like a big pop cultural moment that everyone is engaged in. [Tracy: Mhm] It's like those don't happen that much anymore. Literally, she said, 'World, stop.' And it did. [Tracy laughs]

Tracy: The axis was like, [Imitates record scratching noise] Also I mean, I just learned that Black Southern women are the tops, period. Full stop. Full sentence. Full tweet. That's the tweet. That's the lesson.

Josh: Yep.

Tracy: So happy birthday, Beyoncé  , queen of...um... I was gonna make a list but we ain't got time. Um queen of everything. We appreciate you for being born. It was such a great favor that you did for us.

Josh: Thank you so much for that.

Tracy: Shout out to Mama Tina for being the actual vessel. [They laugh] Shout out to you.

Josh: If you could talk to Beyoncé   right now, what would you say?

Tracy: I would just say thank you and start crying because Beyoncé   has given me  so much in my life. As a Southern Black girl. As a girl who could kinda cook, but you know what i'm sayin, don't really be doin' all that. I think 'thank you' is all I would say. 'Thank you' is like, it's not enough. But there are no words that are enough. 'Thank you.' It's just like the most important thing that I think I would be able to say. What about you?

Josh: [Sighs] I'd say, she's the mother I never had. [Tracy gasps] She's the sister that everybody would want. [Tracy exhales] She's the friend that everyone deserves. I don't know a better person. [Emotionally] I don't know a better person.

Tracy: Oh, my gosh. Your real mom is listening to this like, a word...? [They laugh]
Josh: I stole that from Oprah. I stole that from Oprah.

Tracy: OH! [They laugh]

Josh: She said that about Gayle on time.

Tracy: Awww. Ok, that makes sense. OK.

Josh: But, I would say, I would say, 'Congratulations [Tracy: Mmm] for getting to the point where you get to be in control of your art, in control of what you say and work as hard as you want to, and put out things that you think are important to the culture and to [Tracy: Mhm.] the world. Not everyone gets a chance to get to that point in their career.

Tracy: Right.

Josh: And I would say 'Thank you' but also congratulations. Like, you did that. [Snaps]

Tracy: I have something else, I have something else. You reminded me of something else.

Josh: What else? What else? What else?

Tracy: So, me and my therapist have been talking a lot about intentionality and doing things on purpose. And she is the queen of doing shit on purpose. Like the fact that she has this platform and she's like, you know what? I'm still gon’ be my Black-ass, country-ass, Southern-ass imperfect-ass, angry-ass, hopeful-ass self, all the time now that she, like, earned the right to control herself in her image and who she is... Like, that has actually changed the world because it changed the lives of Black women everywhere.

Josh: Mmm.

Tracy: Okay, I'm getting emotional. Thank you, girl.

Josh: Thank you, Beyoncé .
